As we age, we often think about our health in terms of doctor’s appointments, healthy foods, or taking vitamins. It’s easy to overlook the other aspects of wellness that help us stay happy and healthy.
In today’s blog, we’re sharing three tips that will help you maintain long-term happiness and health.
Moving our bodies helps us stay limber and strong while also improving mental health.
Movement also helps us lower blood pressure and improve cardiovascular health while supporting healthy joints, muscles, and bones.
At Mary Wade, we offer a variety of opportunities to help you stay active and moving.
Whether it’s at our Adult Day Center or in our residential program, everyone has the opportunity to take part in fitness classes designed to support a wide range of abilities. All classes are carefully planned by our ADC Director and Recreational Therapist. A crowd favorite is Tai Chi which offers gentle movement and mindfulness.
Our residents love going out into the community!. It encourages natural movement (and, of course, meaningful interactions in the vibrant social scene nearby!)
We are so grateful for the community around us! To keep our seniors active, we have partnered with several members. One of our most well-known partnerships is our collaboration with the Yale Women’s Soccer Team.
At Mary Wade, each of our residents has different interests as well as abilities, so with the help of our on-site Recreational Therapist and our planned programming, there is an opportunity for everyone to participate in some healthy movement!
Staying healthy goes beyond exercise. What you consume matters– both food as well as hobbies and entertainment.
At Mary Wade, our programming helps you stay nourished in body and spirit. Check out some of our activities:
Residents enjoy sunshine, community, and of course, some fresh produce and healthy treats!
Live music gets all of us tapping our feet. Whether it’s new, or familiar tunes, music is uplifting and fun.
Throughout the year, we offer a variety of activities that help residents get creative and crafty. It’s a wonderful way to socialize while improving dexterity and motor skills and relieving stress.
Residents socialize, practice their critical thinking skills and have some fun with frequent game nights.
Connecting with others improves mental well-being, reduces our stress levels, gives us a sense of purpose, and improves cognition. It’s a win-win!
Some of Mary Wade’s social programs include:
Our residents get to know the officers protecting them and their community with this wonderful partnership!
Our seniors are a key part of our world, so we strive to create programming that connects them to the younger generations. Between volunteers, instructor-led activities, and field trips, our seniors connect with the community.
For many of our seniors, spiritual health is a critical part of their well-being. We make sure that each senior can take part in their preferred religious services each week.
Great conversation lights up the day. That’s why we offer a variety of discussion-based activities to help our residents bond and socialize.
So, whether you’re a bookworm or a social butterfly, make the effort to find the balance of activity that supports your unique needs.
Rest assured, getting active, and nourishing your body and mind, while connecting with the community make a big difference in your overall wellness.
Here’s to a happy and healthy lifestyle in your senior years!
