The Nourish Project: Empowering Healthy Aging Through Food Education and Connection

October 13, 2025

Good nutrition doesn’t just feed the body—it fuels the mind, strengthens community, and supports longevity. That’s the vision behind The Nourish Project, an initiative through Yale’s Dwight Hall dedicated to promoting safe aging, nutritional wellness, and social connectedness among older adults.

Research consistently shows that nutritional well-being can decline with age due to challenges such as limited access to fresh foods, mobility concerns, and changes in appetite or routine. The Nourish Project addresses these issues through a hands-on, educational approach that emphasizes food education as a cornerstone of healthy living.

Yale student volunteers lead interactive seminars on topics such as meal planning, balanced nutrition, and hydration, along with accessible, at-home exercises designed to keep the body active and the mind sharp. Together, these efforts encourage better eating habits and sustained physical activity—two key factors in reducing the risk of age-related illness and improving quality of life.

At Chatham Place at Mary Wade, residents have embraced The Nourish Project with enthusiasm. Since the start of the school year, they’ve participated in lively discussions, cooking demonstrations, and fitness sessions that not only inspire healthier habits but also create a sense of shared purpose. The return of the Yale students has been met with excitement and gratitude, as these intergenerational interactions bring learning, laughter, and genuine connection.

Programs like The Nourish Project highlight the power of food education in promoting wellness and community engagement. By combining knowledge, compassion, and collaboration, students and older adults alike gain a deeper understanding of how simple, sustainable choices—like cooking together or sharing a meal—can transform both health and human connection.
