University of New Haven Students Discover the Joy of Intergenerational Connection at Chatham Place

October 13, 2025

In partnership with the United Way of Greater New Haven, student volunteers from the University of New Haven recently spent an unforgettable afternoon with the seniors at Chatham Place at Mary Wade. What began as a day of volunteering quickly turned into a lively celebration filled with laughter, learning, and meaningful connection.

Students joined residents for limbo, karaoke, photo booth fun, and a bit of stylish dress-up, soon realizing just how much energy and joy can come from spending time across generations. The event not only highlighted the residents’ vibrant spirits but also opened students’ eyes to the power of intergenerational bonding.

Beyond the fun, this experience served as an educational opportunity—a lesson in defying ageism, breaking down stereotypes, and understanding the importance of community engagement. By stepping outside the college campus and into the lives of older adults, the students gained a deeper appreciation for empathy, connection, and shared humanity.

Intergenerational programs like this remind us that community thrives when generations come together to learn, laugh, and lift each other up—proving that age is no barrier to friendship, understanding, or fun.
