Concert & Research: Music, Memory, and Wellness

April 13, 2026

Residents of Chatham Place at Mary Wade recently participated in a unique experience that blended the beauty of live music with meaningful research. In partnership with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and AZA Labs at Yale University, this free live orchestral concert also served as an opportunity to better understand how music supports wellness in older adults.

Open to adults 50+, individuals living with dementia or Alzheimer’s (preferred, but not required), and caregivers of any age, participants had the option to contribute to the research by answering brief questions or wearing a small monitoring device during the performance. These simple measures allow researchers to observe real-time responses—such as changes in mood, attention, and physiological signals—while participants engage with music.

Studying the brain and its response to music is especially important in aging populations. Research continues to show that music can activate multiple areas of the brain at once, including those tied to memory, emotion, and cognition. For individuals experiencing memory loss, music often remains accessible even when other forms of communication become more difficult. Familiar melodies can spark recognition, reduce anxiety, improve mood, and even encourage social interaction.

By collecting data in real-world settings like this live performance, researchers gain valuable insight into how music can be used as a non-pharmacological approach to support emotional and cognitive health. This work has the potential to shape future therapies, enhance quality of life, and provide caregivers with meaningful tools to better connect with those they support.

Experiences like this reflect the enriching, educational opportunities our residents engage in every day—where learning, discovery, and purpose come together. Through their participation, our residents are not only enjoying the moment, but also contributing to advancements that support aging well for generations to come.
