Building Bridges Across Generations

One of their most impactful accomplishments has been cultivating partnerships with students and organizations throughout the region. Through collaborations with Yale University, the University of New Haven, Quinnipiac University, Hopkins School, and the Yale Women’s Soccer Team, they have created meaningful intergenerational experiences that bring joy, companionship, and enrichment to Mary Wade residents.

These relationships not only enhance the lives of older adults but also inspire younger generations through shared experiences, understanding, and lasting connections.

Strengthening the Fair Haven Community

For more than 15 years, Mary Wade has proudly hosted the annual Fair Haven Day Parade, a cherished neighborhood tradition that celebrates community spirit and unity. Jessica, Maria, and Ivette have played an instrumental role in organizing and supporting this event, working alongside local Alders, City of New Haven officials, schools, businesses, first responders, and community organizations.

Their countless volunteer hours and dedication help make the parade a vibrant celebration that brings together families, children, seniors, and neighbors from across Fair Haven.

Their commitment to community engagement extends even further through the annual Fair Haven Senior Citizens’ Thanksgiving Dinner held at the Atwater Senior Center. In partnership with local leaders, volunteers, first responders, and organizations including Fair Haven Community Health Care, CitySeed, the Grand Avenue Special Services District, and the Rotary Club, they help create a welcoming event that celebrates gratitude, connection, and cultural diversity.

Going Beyond the Job Description

Whether organizing Pine Street community events, seasonal celebrations, children’s activities, neighborhood gatherings, or special performances, Jessica, Ivette, and Maria consistently go above and beyond their professional responsibilities.

Many of these initiatives require personal time, creativity, and an unwavering dedication to serving others. Their willingness to volunteer and lead by example demonstrates the heart of Mary Wade’s commitment to community-centered care.

Meet the Changemakers

Jessica Soto, Director of Memory Care at Chatham Place at Mary Wade, brings more than 24 years of progressive healthcare experience. As an NCCDP Certified Dementia Practitioner with a background in Therapeutic Recreation, she is passionate about creating enriching experiences for residents living with memory loss.

Ivette Oliveras, Property Manager for Mary Wade’s 55+ Community, has been a dedicated member of the Mary Wade family since 2013. She oversees multiple residential properties while supporting tenants with professionalism, compassion, and care.

Maria Olmo, Director of Residential Care, shares a deep commitment to resident engagement and community service. Her leadership and volunteerism have helped strengthen the connection between Mary Wade and the surrounding Fair Haven neighborhood.

Together, Jessica, Ivette, and Maria represent the very best of Mary Wade. Their collaborative spirit, dedication to service, and commitment to creating meaningful experiences make them exceptionally deserving recipients of the LeadingAge Connecticut Changemaker Award.
