At Mary Wade, we believe senior living is about more than care — it is about connection, purpose, learning, and community. As a leader in senior living and healthcare services, Mary Wade continues to create meaningful opportunities that bring generations together in ways that enrich lives on both sides. Our collaboration with the University of New Haven is one of those powerful partnerships.
This spring, University of New Haven students are participating in the project, “Across the Years and Miles”: An Exercise in Listening and Learning, an assignment designed to strengthen communication skills through meaningful conversations with older adults. Students interview someone at least 50 years older than themselves, learning about life experiences, memories, challenges, accomplishments, and perspectives from another generation.
For Mary Wade residents, these conversations are far more than classroom assignments. They are opportunities to share wisdom, tell stories, reflect on life experiences, and feel heard. For students, the experience encourages empathy, active listening, and a deeper understanding of aging and human connection beyond textbooks and lectures.
Intergenerational relationships are incredibly important to emotional well-being and community health. When younger and older generations engage with one another, barriers disappear. Stereotypes about aging are replaced with understanding, respect, and genuine connection. Residents gain renewed energy and purpose through storytelling and mentorship, while students gain perspective that can shape both their personal and professional futures.
At Mary Wade, we see these moments happen every day. A simple conversation can become a friendship. A shared memory can spark laughter, reflection, and learning. These interactions remind us that despite differences in age, technology, or life experiences, human connection remains timeless.
Partnerships like the one with the University of New Haven reflect Mary Wade’s ongoing commitment to innovation in senior living. By opening our doors to students and educational programs, we create a living classroom where compassion, communication, and community thrive together.
As Mary Wade continues to lead the way in senior care, we remain committed to building bridges between generations — because learning never stops, stories deserve to be shared, and every generation has something valuable to teach the next.
